The exhibition “Breaking the rules”, presented by Mayoral, invites you to discover a dialogue between four female artists whose work is an important testimony of the pop aesthetics of the 1960s-1970s: Mari Chordà, Ángela Garcia Codoñer, Isabel Oliver and Eulàlia Grau. A selection of eight paintings created between 1966 and 1975 has been brought together for the occasion.

Exhibited by the Tate Modern on the occasion of the exhibition “The World Goes Pop” (2015), their works are included in the permanent collection of the Museo Nacional Centro Reina Sofía, Madrid. As mentioned by Julie Crenn in her essay written for the exhibition, these artists endeavoured to overturn established conventions and practices for the purpose of reinventing the space for the representation of women in Spain, using their art as a response to the authoritarian political regime led by Franco until his death in 1975.

Drawing their inspiration from popular imagery, the media and the history of art, they invite us to embark on a social reflection which is readily echoed in present-day society. The works selected for the exhibition – often tinged with irony – tackle universal subjects such as the question of gender and of representation.
